Presidential Pooches

Ever since President Elect Barack Obama's acceptance speech in Chicago's Grant Park, where he declared his daughters were getting a puppy (awww!) - animal lovers have been watching closely to get the scoop on who will be appointed 'first dog.'

This morning, on ABC's "This Week with George Stephanopoulos," President Elect Obama confirmed the family had narrowed their search to two breeds, a Labradoodle (lab/ poodle mix) and a Portuguese Water Dog. Obama went on to confirm they were searching rescue organizations to find their perfect pooch.

Four dogs have actually already been assigned to the incoming Obama administration. Only these dogs aren't Malia and Sasha Obama's new furry pals, these four canines are highly trained, Secret Service operatives. The four dogs are being dispatched from Ft. Myers, Virginia to work crowd control up to, during and after the inauguaration.

These four highly skilled security operatives are experts at sniffing out bombs, crowd control and are 'Patrol Certified'. Army Staff Sgt. Sarah Goulart told the Armed Forces Press Service, “That means they can do security missions, [and] if they need to be released on somebody, they can be released to detain them.”

These dogs come with related experience on their resumes, as well. One of the dogs, Mike, a six year old Belgian Malinois (left) worked security at Camp David, protecting President Bush as he and the first family enjoyed the Christmas holiday.

Woof!

  1. Hi--

Stan & Pupi are our mutual friends, so I thought I should introduce myself. I am a border collie puppy dog (16 months) and live in Bethesda. After reading your blog and meetup agenda, I realized that we go to the same places! I learned how to stack and walk pretty from Jane at The Dog Shop. She helped prepare me for my first ever dog show and I even got a blue ribbon and Best of Winners. And, I also started agility training with Melissa at Woofs! I may end up joining the class that starts at the end of January.

I wish I were a smaller dog so I could join your pack on some of those fun activities. But I'm almost 45 pounds now, and true to my border collie nature, I am VERY energetic and might scare some of your little friends. Yet, I think I am as pampered as a little dog!

Do you know about the Posh Pooch in Bethesda? They have lots of lovely things for doggies like yourself and it's a very cultured pet store.

    Nice to meet you!

  2. Wow! I'd love to come meet your pack. I know about the dog park at Montrose and went once when Jane had agility stuff set up. I'm not expert, that's for sure, but I'd love to come and do a show and tell about some of the stuff we've managed to do to prepare me for The Big Time. My owners made me little jumps out of PVC pipe fittings and there are lots of free instruction plans you can find on the internet to make you own jumps and other things. My teeter board is tons of fun and has taught me more about bravery. I've even seen a chihuahua compete in real agility contests and do very well.

That's cool you know a Fenway. When I am in the show ring I am known as Tartan Bay Green Monster. I only compete in the conformation shows but hope to get good enough at agility to do that, too.

Please give Jane a lick for me. And you will ADORE The Posh Pooch. Tell your humans to bring tons of cash. They have lots of bully sticks and that's where my first one came from. They also have an online store, but please go there. They TOTALLY fawn over us doggies!
